The Mother’s Day Weekend Classic Soul will perform for one show only at Chartway Arena in Norfolk, VA on Friday May 10, 2024 with Showtime 8:00p / Doors 7:00p. This epic event will present a fun filled evening of R&B music. Artists include Grammy Nominated Charlie Wilson and The Whispers.
To say that Charlie Wilson is an “Icon,” does not truly describe the musical powerhouse whose vocal prowess began as founding member and lead singer of the legendary GAP Band (“You Dropped the Bomb on Me,” “Outstanding,” “Party Train,” and “Burn Rubber on Me.”)
As a solo artist Wilson has topped the R&B charts with 13 number one singles, garnered 13 GRAMMY® nominations, is a New York Times and Washington Post best-selling memoir, “I Am Charlie Wilson,” received a BET Lifetime Achievement Award, a Soul Train Icon Award, a Soul Train Certified Soul Award, and a NAACP Music Makes a Difference Award. He was also honored with a star on the Black Music & Entertainment Walk Of Fame in 2022 and will be receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2024.
The Whispers formed in 1964 in Los Angeles, California. The group consists of Walter Scott, Wallace Scott and Leaveil Degree. They are best known for their hit songs such as “Rock Steady”, “And the Beat Goes On”, “It’s a Love Thing”, and "Lady".
The Whispers earned two platinum and five gold albums certified by the RIAA. Notably, their self-titled album “The Whispers” and “Love Is Where You Find It” both reached the No. 1 spot on the R&B albums chart.
